Target Information
ZEB2, initially identified as Smad interacting-protein 1, is a nuclear DNA-binding transcriptional repressor that interacts with activated SMADs. Similar to ZEB1, ZEB2 inhibits E-cadherin transcription and induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a genetic program controlling cell migration during embryonic development and wound healing. ZEB2 also protects cells from DNA damage-induced apoptosis, suggesting a role in tumor progression. It is frequently observed in the cytoplasm of various cancer tissues, indicating regulated localization in normal and tumor contexts. Mutations in this gene are associated with Hirschsprung disease and Mowat-Wilson syndrome.
