Target Information
ZEB2, initially identified as Smad interacting-protein 1, is a nuclear DNA-binding transcriptional repressor that interacts with activated SMADs. Similar to ZEB1, ZEB2 inhibits E-cadherin transcription and induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a process regulating cell migration during embryogenesis and wound healing. ZEB2 also protects cells from DNA damage-induced apoptosis, potentially contributing to tumor progression. In many cancer tissues, ZEB2 is observed in the cytoplasm, suggesting regulated localization. Mutations in this gene are associated with Hirschsprung disease/Mowat-Wilson syndrome.
