Target Information
The CD4 antigen is involved in the recognition of MHC class II molecules and acts as a co-receptor for HIV. CD4 is mainly expressed in T helper cells but also found in monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. At the tissue level, CD4 expression can be detected in thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and in specific regions of the brain and gut. CD4 contributes to T-cell activation through association with the T-cell receptor complex and protein tyrosine kinase Lck. Additionally, it may mediate neuronal damage in infectious and immune-mediated CNS diseases. Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts have been identified for this gene.
