This gene belongs to the bestrophin family of anion channels.
Bestrophins share conserved exon-intron boundaries but have distinct 3′ ends.
They are transmembrane proteins rich in aromatic residues and contain an invariant Arg-Phe-Pro motif.
Mutation in bestrophin 1 is associated with vitelliform macular dystrophy.
Bestrophin 4 is predominantly expressed in the colon.
