Target Information

CD44 is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, white matter of the brain, and various epithelial cells. It acts as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and is involved in cell adhesion, migration, and cell–cell interactions. CD44 participates in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing. Expression may increase in certain carcinomas, potentially related to metastatic potential.

CD44 is expressed in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia of cultured keratinocytes. High expression is found in bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells, while peripheral B and T cells can upregulate CD44 upon stimulation. The CD44 gene undergoes complex alternative splicing, resulting in multiple isoforms with distinct functions. Dysregulation of CD44 is associated with diseases such as superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and may be linked to tumor metastasis formation.
