Target Information
The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is commonly activated in various tumor cells and plays a critical role in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression.
Phosphorylation of c-Myc at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as GSK3, CDK, ERK2, and JNK is associated with cell proliferation and cycle regulation.
c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis during tumor development. Deregulated expression induces apoptosis in different cell types.
Antibodies against c-Myc epitopes recognize overexpressed proteins containing Myc epitope tags fused to amino- or carboxy-termini of target proteins.
Amplification of the c-Myc gene occurs in several human tumors, including lung, breast, and colon carcinomas, while N-Myc amplification is found in neuroblastomas.
Chromosomal translocations involving c-Myc are described in Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell lymphoproliferative conditions.
Aberrant expression of c-Myc is observed in tumors of diverse origins such as colorectal, gastric, hepatic, ovarian, pulmonary, and hematopoietic neoplasms.
