Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S and a large 39S subunit, with a higher protein-to-rRNA ratio (~75%) compared to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA.
The MRPS21 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein of the ribosomal protein S21P family. Pseudogenes are found on multiple chromosomes (1p, 1q, 9p, 10p, 10q, 16q, 17q). Sequence analyses have identified splice variants differing in the 5′ UTR, but both encode the same protein.
