NTRK2 (TrkB) is a receptor for brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and plays a central role in neuronal development and maintenance. TrkB regulates synaptic function and long-term potentiation in the brain. It is a membrane-bound tyrosine kinase receptor that, upon neurotrophin binding, activates MAPK pathway signaling leading to cell differentiation. Mutations in TrkB are associated with obesity and mood disorders. Expression is mainly confined to the central and peripheral nervous systems.
