Target Information
Calnexin, also referred to as IP90, p88, and p90, is an approximately 90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It acts as a molecular chaperone aiding in proper folding and assembly of polypeptides. Calnexin associates with MHC class I heavy chains and partial complexes of T cell receptor and B cell membrane immunoglobulin. It retains incompletely folded proteins in the ER. Soluble ER proteins often contain the KDEL sequence for retention, while integral membrane proteins like calnexin rely on positively charged cytosolic residues for ER localization. Calnexin structure includes a large ER luminal domain (461 amino acids), a transmembrane segment (22 amino acids), and a cytoplasmic tail (89 amino acids).
