Target Information
Ribosomes are organelles responsible for protein synthesis, composed of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit, containing 4 RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins.
The RPS19 gene encodes a ribosomal protein of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S19E family. It is localized in the cytoplasm.
Mutations in this gene cause Diamond-Blackfan anemia, characterized by reduced erythroid precursors. This suggests an extra-ribosomal role in erythropoiesis and proliferation.
Higher expression levels have been observed in some primary colon carcinomas compared to normal tissues.
Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
