Target Information

Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis and consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit, composed of 4 RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins.
This gene encodes a cytoplasmic ribosomal protein that is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S6E family. It is a major substrate of ribosomal protein kinases, with phosphorylation of five C-terminal serine residues by different kinases.
Phosphorylation is induced by various stimuli such as growth factors, tumor-promoting agents, and mitogens, while dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest.
The protein may regulate cell growth and proliferation via selective translation of specific mRNA classes.
Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
