Target Information

Ribosomes, the organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit, composed of 4 RNA species and ~80 distinct proteins. This gene encodes a cytoplasmic ribosomal protein that is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S6E family. It serves as a major substrate for ribosomal protein kinases, with phosphorylation of five C-terminal serine residues mediated by various kinases. Phosphorylation is induced by growth factors, tumor-promoting agents, and mitogens, while dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest. The protein may regulate cell growth and proliferation via selective translation of specific mRNA classes. Multiple processed pseudogenes are distributed throughout the genome.
