Target Information

PEDF (Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor) is a noninhibitory serpin with neurotrophic, anti-angiogenic, and anti-tumorigenic properties. It is a 50 kDa glycoprotein secreted by various tissues. PEDF induces apoptosis in proliferating endothelial cells and inhibits angiogenic factors such as VEGF and FGF-2.

PEDF exhibits neuroprotective effects by suppressing neuronal apoptosis induced by oxidative stress or neurotoxins. The discovery of a high-affinity cell membrane receptor (PEDF-R) has provided insight into its mechanisms. PEDF’s multifunctional properties make it a potential therapeutic target for diseases like AMD, PDR, and angiogenesis-related cancers.
