The SERPINF2 gene encodes a serpin family member that acts as a major inhibitor of plasmin, which degrades fibrin and other proteins. Proper function of this gene is crucial for regulating the blood clotting pathway. Mutations can lead to alpha-2-plasmin inhibitor deficiency, characterized by severe hemorrhagic diathesis. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
