Target Information
ALDH1A1 belongs to the aldehyde dehydrogenase family of proteins. This enzyme participates in the major oxidative pathway of alcohol metabolism.
Two major liver isoforms—cytosolic and mitochondrial—can be distinguished by electrophoretic mobility, kinetic properties, and subcellular localization.
Most Caucasians have both isozymes, while about 50% of Orientals possess only the cytosolic isozyme, lacking the mitochondrial form. This absence may correlate with a higher frequency of acute alcohol intoxication among Orientals.
