Target Information

TEF1 (Transcriptional enhancer factor 1), a member of the TEA/ATTS domain family, is a nuclear protein expressed in numerous cell types and plays a role in controlling gene expression. TEF family members possess a highly conserved DNA-binding domain. TEF-1 binds to GT-IIC, SphI/II, and M-CAT sites, and to the proximal regulatory element (PRE) of transforming growth factor-alpha, which is overexpressed in various cancers. TEF-1 represses transcription in placental cells and is phosphorylated by PKC isozymes, both in vivo and in vitro, reducing its DNA-binding capability. This suggests a potential role in PKC inhibition and tumorigenesis. Dimerization of TEF-1 may be essential for its function as a transcription regulator.
