Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is a T cell stimulatory cytokine that induces T cell and NK cell proliferation and activation. Produced by T-cells in response to antigenic or mitogenic stimulation, IL-2 is crucial for immune response regulation. It can stimulate B-cells, monocytes, lymphokine-activated killer cells, natural killer cells, and glioma cells. The IL-2 receptor is a heterotrimeric complex whose gamma chain is shared by IL-4 and IL-7. IL-2 also induces CTLA-4 and functions as a survival factor for lymphocytes.
Target Information
Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is an immunomodulatory cytokine essential for proliferation of activated T cells and differentiation of B cells, NK cells, monocytes, and macrophages. IL-2 signals through IL-2R, a heterotrimeric receptor complex sharing the gamma chain with IL-4 and IL-7. Expression of IL-2 in mature thymocytes is monoallelic, a unique regulatory feature. Gene disruption in mice causes ulcerative colitis-like disease, highlighting IL-2’s role in immune regulation.
