Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein family, part of the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily. These proteins play key roles in growth and differentiation. BMPs were first identified by their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis in vivo. BMP-4 is crucial for endochondral bone formation, and reduced expression is linked to bone diseases such as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Alternative splicing in the 5′ untranslated region yields three variants encoding the same protein.
