Target Information

The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is frequently activated in various tumor cells and plays a critical role in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression.

Phosphorylation of c-Myc at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as glycogen synthase kinase 3, cyclin-dependent kinase, ERK2, and JNK is functionally associated with cell proliferation and cell cycle regulation. c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis during tumor development.

The c-Myc oncogene (p62 c-Myc) regulates normal cellular proliferation and differentiation, while deregulated expression can induce apoptosis. Antibodies against c-Myc epitopes recognize overexpressed proteins containing Myc tags fused to target proteins. Amplification of c-Myc has been observed in various human cancers, including lung, breast, and colon carcinomas. Translocations involving the c-Myc locus are characteristic of Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell proliferative disorders.

Aberrant expression of c-Myc occurs in tumors of multiple origins such as colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, pulmonary, and hematopoietic neoplasms.
