Target Information
Autophagy is a process of bulk degradation of cellular proteins through an autophagosomic-lysosomal pathway, essential for normal growth control and cellular homeostasis. Defects in autophagy are implicated in tumorigenesis and Crohn’s disease.
IRGM and ATG16L1 are key genes associated with autophagy regulation. In mice, IRGM is a γ-interferon-induced GTP-binding protein (~48 kDa) that induces autophagy and aids in eliminating intracellular Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Human IRGM similarly contributes to autophagy, controlling intracellular pathogens and reducing intracellular bacillary load.
