Tubulin is a member of a small family of globular proteins, primarily alpha-tubulin and beta-tubulin, which make up microtubules—essential structural components found in nearly all eukaryotic cells. Monoclonal antibodies to alpha-tubulin serve as reliable housekeeping protein markers and are valuable tools for accurate interpretation of western blot analyses.

Target Information

Alpha Tubulin forms a heterodimer with beta Tubulin, each approximately 55 kDa, constituting the basic building block of microtubules. These intracellular filamentous structures are essential in nearly all eukaryotic cells, contributing to cell structure, transport, and mitosis.

Microtubules are composed mainly of alpha and beta tubulins, while gamma tubulin is crucial for microtubule nucleation. Multiple alpha and beta tubulin genes are highly conserved across species. The alpha tubulin gene shows high similarity to mouse and rat Tuba1 genes, with expression predominantly in morphologically differentiated neurologic cells.
