GDF6는 성장분화인자(GDFs)로, transforming growth factor (TGF) 슈퍼패밀리에 속하며 배아 발달 및 성체 조직 항상성에 관여합니다.
GDF6와 GDF7은 GDF5와 밀접하게 관련되어 있으며, GDF5는 plasminogen activator를 활성화하여 혈관신생을 유도하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
GDF6는 태아기 장골에서 주로 발현되며, 골 형성에 관여합니다. Xenopus에서 GDF6는 신경판 가장자리와 눈 형성 영역을 포함한 전방 신경판에 발현됩니다.
이 단백질은 사지, 두개골, 축골격의 일부 뼈와 관절의 정상적인 형성에 필요하며, bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs)와 상호작용하여 외배엽 패턴 형성과 안구 발달을 조절할 수 있습니다.
이 유전자 돌연변이는 안구 발달 이상인 colobomata 및 척추 분절 선천성 장애인 Klippel-Feil syndrome(KFS)을 유발할 수 있습니다.
