Target Information
Haptoglobin captures free plasma hemoglobin to enable hepatic recycling of heme iron and prevent kidney damage. It also acts as an antioxidant, has antibacterial activity, and modulates the acute phase response. Hemoglobin/haptoglobin complexes are cleared by macrophage CD163 receptors through lysosomal degradation pathways.
The uncleaved form of allele alpha-2 (2-2), known as zonulin, plays a role in intestinal permeability, regulating tight junction disassembly and immune tolerance.
