Target Information
Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. It acts on ligand-gated receptor channels such as NMDA, AMPA, and kainate receptors, which mediate fast excitatory synaptic transmission.
Recently, glutamate has also been shown to regulate enzymes producing second messengers through metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) coupled to G-proteins.
- Group-I receptors (mGluR1a, mGluR5): Stimulate phospholipase C, increasing phosphoinositide turnover and calcium release from internal stores.
- Group-II and -III receptors (mGluR2, mGluR3): Inhibit adenylyl cyclase activity.
