Target Information
Neuron specific enolase (NSE, ENO1, ENO2, ENO3) is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate in the glycolytic pathway, and the reverse reaction in gluconeogenesis.
NSE has high stability in biological fluids and diffuses easily into extracellular medium and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) when neuronal membranes are injured.
It is one of three mammalian enolases (ENO1, ENO2, ENO3), also known as enolase alpha, beta, and gamma.
- Alpha-subunit: expressed in most tissues
- Beta-subunit: expressed only in muscle
- Gamma-subunit: expressed primarily in neurons and neuroendocrine cells
Co-expression of NSE and chromogranin A is common in neuroendocrine neoplasms.
Antibodies to NSE are useful for identifying neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineage, and neuroendocrine cells.
NSE release into CSF and blood serves as a biomarker of neuronal injury and is clinically used as a marker of neuronal damage in disorders such as stroke, hypoxic brain injury, status epilepticus, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and herpetic encephalitis.
Elevated NSE levels are also observed in neuroblastoma and small cell lung cancer.
