Target Information
This gene belongs to the natriuretic peptide family and encodes a secreted cardiac hormone. The protein undergoes two cleavage events—one intracellularly and another after secretion into the blood. Its biological actions include:
- Natriuresis and diuresis
- Vasorelaxation
- Inhibition of renin and aldosterone secretion
- Regulation of cardiovascular homeostasis
Elevated levels of this protein in the bloodstream are indicative of heart failure. Mutations have been linked to postmenopausal osteoporosis.
