Target Information
The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is commonly activated in various tumor cells and plays a critical role in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression.
Phosphorylation of c-Myc at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as glycogen synthase kinase 3, cyclin-dependent kinase, ERK2, and JNK is associated with regulation of cell proliferation and cycle control. c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis during tumor development.
The c-Myc oncogene (p62 c-myc) regulates normal cellular proliferation and differentiation, while deregulated expression induces apoptosis in various cell types. Antibodies against c-Myc epitopes recognize overexpressed proteins containing Myc epitope tags fused to either amino- or carboxy-termini of target proteins.
c-Myc, N-Myc, and L-Myc proteins function in cell proliferation, differentiation, and neoplastic disease. Amplification of the c-Myc gene is observed in lung, breast, and colon carcinomas, while N-Myc amplification is found in neuroblastomas. Translocation of the c-Myc locus on chromosome 8 to immunoglobulin loci on chromosomes 14, 2, or 22 is characteristic of Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders. Aberrant c-Myc expression occurs in tumors of colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, pulmonary, and hematopoietic origin, among others.
