In the central nervous system, GABA acts as the main inhibitory neurotransmitter by increasing Cl⁻ conductance that inhibits neuronal firing.
GABA activates ionotropic (GABAA) and metabotropic (GABAB) receptors, as well as GABAC receptors.
- GABAA and GABAC are ligand-gated ion channels, structurally and functionally distinct.
- GABAA receptor family includes: GABAA Rα1–6, GABAA Rβ1–3, GABAA Rγ1–3, GABAA Rδ, GABAA Rε, GABAA Rρ1, GABAA Rρ2.
- GABAB family includes: GABAB R1α and GABAB R1β.
- GABA transporters (GAT-1, GAT-2, GAT-3) terminate GABA action.
