Target Information
Cytokeratins are a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins characterized by biochemical diversity, represented in human epithelial tissues by at least 20 different polypeptides. They range in molecular weight between approximately 40 kDa and 68 kDa, with isoelectric pH between 4.9 and 7.8. Each cytokeratin subtype is numbered 1 to 20.
Different epithelia express specific cytokeratins related to tissue type and differentiation stage. Cytokeratin subtype expression patterns are widely used to distinguish epithelial malignancies. Cytokeratin antibodies assist in tumor differential diagnosis using immunohistochemistry and are also useful in cytopathology and flow cytometry assays.
