Target Information
The Myogenic determination gene (MyoD) was first identified by its ability to convert embryonic mouse fibroblast cells into muscle cells. Forced expression of MyoD (human homolog is myf3) in various normal and neoplastic cells can induce muscle cell conversion or activate muscle-specific genes.
The regulatory domain of MyoD lies within a 70 amino acid region containing a basic DNA-binding motif and a helix-loop-helix (HLH) dimerization motif. Related genes sharing sequence homology include myf5, myogenin (myf4), and myf6 (MRF4/herculin).
