Target Information
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, composed of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit, which together include 4 RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins. The S6 ribosomal protein is a component of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S6E family. It is a major substrate for protein kinases, with phosphorylation of five C-terminal serine residues regulated by various stimuli such as growth factors and mitogens. Dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest, and the protein may play a role in cell growth and proliferation by selectively translating specific mRNAs. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
