Target Information
Calpastatin is an endogenous inhibitor of calpain, a calcium-dependent cysteine protease. It consists of an N-terminal domain L and four repetitive calpain-inhibition domains (1–4). Calpastatin participates in the proteolysis of amyloid precursor protein and plays a role in various membrane fusion events such as neural vesicle exocytosis, platelet, and red-cell aggregation. It may also influence the expression of genes encoding structural or regulatory proteins.
