Target Information

STAT5 alpha is a member of the STAT family of transcription factors. In response to cytokines and growth factors, STAT family members are phosphorylated by receptor-associated kinases and form homo- or heterodimers that translocate to the nucleus to act as transcription activators.
STAT5 alpha mediates responses to ligands such as IL2, IL3, IL7, GM-CSF, erythropoietin, thrombopoietin, and various growth hormones. Constitutive activation of STAT5 alpha, such as in TEL/JAK2 fusion-associated myeloma and lymphoma, contributes to tumorigenesis.
In mice, STAT5 alpha induces BCL2L1/BCL-X(L) expression, suggesting an anti-apoptotic role. STAT5 alpha and STAT5 beta share 96% sequence similarity and are co-expressed in most tissues, though their mRNA levels differ in muscle and mammary tissues. STAT5 alpha is essential for reproduction, lactation, immune function, and growth.
