Target Information
Estrogen Receptors (ER) are members of the steroid/thyroid hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. The estrogen receptor is a ligand-activated transcription factor that, when bound to estrogen, undergoes a conformational change allowing dimerization and binding to estrogen response elements (ERE) in DNA. ERs regulate gene transcription through coactivator or corepressor recruitment.
There are two forms, alpha and beta, encoded by ESR1 and ESR2. At least four isoforms of ER-alpha exist (66, 53, 47, and 35 kDa).
Estrogen receptors are broadly expressed and essential for sexual development and reproductive function, as well as bone health. They are implicated in diseases including breast cancer, endometrial cancer, and osteoporosis.
