Target Information

Ataxia-telangiectasia Mutated (ATM) is a protein belonging to the PI3/PI4 kinase family. The ATM gene encodes a kinase that phosphorylates proteins involved in cell-cycle regulation, including P53, Mdm2, BRCA1, and SMC1. ATM plays a crucial role in repairing double-stranded DNA breaks caused by ionizing radiation and other mutagens. Its C-terminal region shows homology to catalytic domains of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinases. Upon DNA damage, ATM becomes autophosphorylated and activates downstream kinases regulating cell cycle, apoptosis, and DNA repair. Mutations in ATM are associated with ataxia-telangiectasia, a disorder characterized by neurodegeneration, immunodeficiency, and cancer susceptibility.
