Target Information
Insulin is a peptide hormone secreted by pancreatic β-cells that regulates carbohydrate, protein, and lipid metabolism by enhancing membrane transport of glucose, amino acids, and certain ions. It promotes glycogen storage, triglyceride formation, and protein/nucleic acid synthesis.
Insulin is a 51-amino acid polypeptide derived from proinsulin, which is cleaved into A and B chains linked by disulfide bonds and one molecule of C-peptide.
Insulin deficiency leads to diabetes mellitus, a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Insulin is also found in β-cell tumors such as insulinoma.
