Target Information
Histone deacetylase 4 (HDAC4) deacetylates lysine residues on the N-terminal part of core histones (H2A, H2B, H3, H4). This deacetylation is associated with epigenetic repression and plays key roles in transcriptional regulation, cell cycle progression, and development. HDAC4 functions through multiprotein complexes and contributes to muscle maturation via interactions with MEF2A, MEF2C, and MEF2D. It also participates in MTA1-mediated epigenetic regulation of ESR1 expression in breast cancer. Mutations in the HDAC4 gene are linked to Brachydactyly-mental retardation syndrome (BDMR).
