Target Information
The SLC2A4 (GLUT4) gene belongs to the solute carrier family 2 (facilitated glucose transporter) family. It encodes an insulin-regulated glucose transporter protein.
In the absence of insulin, this integral membrane protein is sequestered within muscle and adipose tissue cells. Upon insulin stimulation, it translocates to the cell surface to facilitate glucose uptake.
Mutations in this gene have been associated with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).
