Target Information
Agrin is a molecule located in the basal lamina of muscle cells and plays a key role in postsynaptic differentiation. It induces clustering of acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) at the neuromuscular junction. Various splice variants exist, with those containing inserts at the carboxy terminus (y and z) showing high affinity for AChRs. Muscle alpha-dystroglycan is proposed as the receptor for Agrin’s clustering activity, though this remains under debate. Tyrosine phosphorylation is an early required step in AChR aggregation, and the receptor tyrosine kinase MuSK interacts specifically with Agrin during muscle development.
