Target Information
COL17A1 encodes the alpha chain of type XVII collagen, a transmembrane protein and structural component of hemidesmosomes at the dermal-epidermal basement membrane. It mediates keratinocyte adhesion and belongs to the FACIT collagen family (fibril-associated collagens with interrupted helices).
COL17A1 is found in tissues containing type I collagen and contributes to extracellular matrix integrity.
Associated diseases include epithelial recurrent erosion dystrophy and epidermolysis bullosa.
