Target Information

Transferrins (Tf) are ~80 kDa blood plasma glycoproteins synthesized by the liver. They function as iron-binding transport proteins, capable of binding two Fe³⁺ ions along with an anion, typically bicarbonate. Transferrin mediates iron transport from absorption and heme degradation sites to storage and utilization sites.
Approximately one-third of total blood transferrin normally contains bound iron. Blood transferrin levels serve as indicators of iron-carrying capacity and can reflect abnormalities such as anemia, iron overload, and haemochromatosis. Serum transferrin may also promote cell proliferation.
