Target Information
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major cause of acute and chronic liver disease and is the most common form of parenterally transmitted viral hepatitis. The HBV surface protein antigens (HBsAg) consist of three co-terminal proteins: large (LHBs), middle (MHBs), and small (SHBs, also called major) proteins.
LHBs and MHBs share the hydrophobic, membrane-spanning S domain, while MHBs includes a 55 amino acid preS2 region. HBV affects approximately 350 million people worldwide. Immunization against HBV is a key preventive measure and is offered to all children in many countries. HBV, a member of the Hepadnaviridae family, can lead to persistent infection and hepatocellular carcinoma development. There are currently about 400 million HBV carriers globally, making it one of the most common human pathogens.
