Target Information

The genus Streptococcus comprises a variety of pathogenic and commensal gram-positive bacteria of medical and industrial importance. These bacteria inhabit diverse hosts including humans, horses, pigs, and cows, commonly colonizing mucosal surfaces such as the mouth, nares, and pharynx. Under certain conditions, they may also infect skin, heart, or muscle tissue.
While often part of the natural flora, streptococci can cause disease under specific circumstances. They are classified by serogroups, with Group A and B streptococci being particularly significant in medicine due to their potential to cause severe infections.
