Target Information

cAMP is a signaling molecule crucial for various cellular functions. It activates cAMP-dependent protein kinase (AMPK), which phosphorylates different target proteins. The inactive holoenzyme of AMPK is a tetramer with two regulatory and two catalytic subunits. Upon cAMP binding, the holoenzyme dissociates into regulatory dimers and free catalytic monomers. Humans have four regulatory and three catalytic AMPK subunits. The PRKAR2A gene encodes one of the regulatory subunits, which can be phosphorylated by the activated catalytic subunit and interacts with A-kinase anchoring proteins to determine AMPK subcellular localization.
