Target Information
Autophagy related protein 16L (encoded by the ATG16L gene) is located on chromosome 2 in humans. It is also known as WD30 or IBD10 (Inflammatory Bowel Disease 10).
ATG12 and ATG5 conjugate and oligomerize with ATG16L to form an ~800 kDa Atg16L complex, which mediates coupling or lipidation of LC3 to phosphatidylethanolamine (PE).
This ubiquitin-like conjugation system serves as a widely used marker for autophagy.
The ATG16L complex, together with other ATGs such as ATG18 and ATG21, prevents premature cleavage of ATG8-PE by the cysteine protease Atg4 until the autophagosome is complete.
