Product Specific Information

PA1-9565 detects GFAP in human, mouse, and rat samples.
It has been successfully used in Western blot, immunohistochemistry, and immunocytochemistry procedures.
The immunogen is a human GFAP fusion protein.

Target Information

GFAP (Glial fibrillary acidic protein) is a class III intermediate filament protein expressed in astrocytes and certain astroglia of the central nervous system, satellite cells of peripheral ganglia, and non-myelinating Schwann cells. Neural stem cells also express GFAP strongly.
Antibodies to GFAP are useful as markers of astrocytic cells and are expressed in various brain tumors derived from astrocytic cells. GFAP can also be found in lens epithelium, Kupffer cells of the liver, salivary tumors, and erythrocytes.
It is used to distinguish astrocytes from other glial cells during development. Mutations in the GFAP gene cause Alexander disease, a rare disorder of astrocytes in the central nervous system.
Alternative splicing of the GFAP gene results in multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
