Target Information
ATG3 (APG3) is a conjugating enzyme essential for APG8 lipidation, a critical step in the initiation of autophagy.
Autophagy is a cellular degradation process via the autophagosomal-lysosomal pathway, important for growth control and nutrient preservation.
Defects in autophagy may be linked to tumor cell abnormalities.
ATG3 acts as an E2-like enzyme catalyzing the formation of the Atg8-phosphatidylethanolamine (Atg8-PE) conjugate, which is essential for autophagosome formation.
This process is negatively regulated by TOR (Target of rapamycin) through phosphorylation of autophagy protein APG1.
