Target Information
ATG3 (APG3) is a widely expressed conjugating enzyme essential for APG8 lipidation, a key step in autophagy initiation.
Autophagy, a process of bulk degradation of cellular proteins via the autophagosomic-lysosomal pathway, is crucial for normal growth control and may be defective in tumor cells.
It helps preserve cellular nutrients under starvation and supports cytosolic component turnover.
This process is negatively regulated by TOR (Target of rapamycin) through phosphorylation of autophagy protein APG1.
ATG3 acts as an E2-like enzyme during early autophagosome formation, catalyzing Atg8-phosphatidylethanolamine (Atg8-PE) conjugate formation, critical for autophagy.
