Target Information
Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, plays a key role in development, tissue turnover, and tumor formation. PDCD4 (Programmed Cell Death Protein 4) is a tumor suppressor whose expression increases during apoptosis and is lost in several carcinomas (breast, colon, lung, prostate). PDCD4 inhibits the helicase activity of eIF4A and the AP-1-mediated transactivation and transformation. Akt kinase regulates PDCD4 by phosphorylation, reducing its ability to interfere with AP-1-responsive promoter activation. Two isoforms of PDCD4 are known.
