Target Information
Neurofilaments (NFs) are intermediate filaments expressed almost exclusively in neuronal cells, particularly in large axons. They consist of three polypeptide chains—NF-M, NF-H, and NF-L—that share a coiled-coil core domain but differ in terminal regions. The NF-M tail domain mediates interactions critical for axonal size and cytoskeletal architecture. NF-M phosphorylation and O-GlcNAcylation are reciprocally regulated, influencing filament formation and function. Antibodies to neurofilament subunits serve as reliable neuronal markers due to their abundance, neuron-specific expression, and biochemical stability.
